Ford and Chevy have brought their all-new lineups of compact SUVs with the 2020 Ford Escape and the 2020 Chevy Equinox. Both the Escape and the Equinox embody the powerful capability and performance of a higher-end compact SUV while highlighting their versatility and line of features. But which vehicle came out on top to bring in 2020? Here are some of the ways the 2020 Ford Escape compares to the 2020 Chevy Equinox.

Engine Options

When it comes to select performance, the 2020 Ford Escape edges out the competition, offering three different engine options for its new 2020 lineup. The standard, entry-level engine for the 2020 Ford Escape is a 1.5-Liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing up 181 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft of torque. The direct-injection engine comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second engine option offered is the upgraded EcoBoost engine, which features a 2.0-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection. This option pumps out 250 hp with 280 lb.-ft of torque. The last engine option comes in the 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid. The 2020 Escape Hybrid comes with a liquid-cooled 1.1-kW-hour battery pack alongside a 2.5-Liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission.

On the other hand, the 2020 Chevy Equinox is offered with two engine options. The first standard base engine is the 1.5-Liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine pushing out 170 horsepower at 5600 rpm with 203 lb.-ft of torque. This base engine option also comes with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The second, high-performance option features a 2.0-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 9-speed shiftable automatic transmission. This model pumps out 252 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque.

Interior Space

While the rear passenger space for both the 2020 Escape and the 2020 Equinox are comparable, the 2020 Ford Escape comes with a slightly larger interior cabin than the 2020 Chevy Equinox. This provides a more comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger alike. The 2020 Ford Escape also comes with larger interior dimensions with more front head and legroom for the driver as well as the front seat passenger.

Safety Features

When it comes to safety features, the 2020 Ford Escape pulls ahead of the 2020 Chevy Equinox, offering more features that the Equinox doesn’t have. Some safety features of the 2020 Escape include height-adjustable seat belts, a driver alert monitor, and a standard Post Collision Braking system, which helps to prevent secondary accidents after an initial collision. The 2020 Ford Escape also comes standardly equipped with a mode that will prevent drivers from becoming stranded if the engine runs out of coolant. This works by having the engine run on only half of its cylinders to reduce power usage. The 2020 Chevy Equinox does not offer any of these safety features.
