2022 Ford Explorer vs 2021 Ford Explorer

Serving Wellington, OH

The Explorer has been a midsize SUV standout in the Ford lineup for the last few decades. In 2022, the Explorer broke fresh ground with the debut of its sixth generation, and Ford has continued to make thoughtful improvements to the model since that time. Now that you are excited about making the Explorer your next SUV, you may be ready to learn about the latest updates that Ford has made to the 2022 model year.

Performance

The trim lineup for this three-row SUV has expanded in 2022 with the introduction of the ST-Line. The current trim lineup runs from the base and XLT levels to the Limited, ST-Line, Timberline, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. The ST-Line has the same powertrain in most of the other trim levels. This is a 300-horsepower, turbo 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine. It is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and comes with your choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Select trims have a turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 400 horsepower. Some trims also have standard all-wheel drive, an upgraded suspension system, and upgraded mechanical features.

Appearance

All carryover trims between the 2021 and 2022 model years are unchanged. However, the new ST-Line trim level has some sporty details that give it a standout look. These include a black grille, tinted headlights and taillights, and 20-inch wheels. All trims have long angles through the profile and premium definition cascading across the side panels. Both the headlights and foglamps run horizontally to draw attention to the width of the hexagonal grille.

Features

With a close look, you may notice that there has been a subtle reshuffling of standard and optional features across some of the trim levels for 2021 and 2022. In 2022, the new ST-Line adds voice controls for the navigation system, a wireless charging pad, simulated leather upholstery with microfiber accents, black interior accents, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 12 speakers. Other features that you may find in some or all of the Explorer’s trims for both years are smart device integration, heated front seats, heated and power-folding seats in the second row, USB ports, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and many other prime features.
